Gareng

Gareng adalah anak pertama Semar. 

Gareng konon berasal dari batang kayu kering, kemudian dijadikan Semar yang merasa kesepian di bumi menjadi anaknya. 

Semar

Semar merupakan pusat dari punakawan sendiri dan asal usul dari keseluruhan punakawan itu sendiri. Semar disegani oleh kawan maupun lawan, karena Semar adalah perwujudan Sang Hyang Ismaya yang menjadi manusia. Ismaya adalah simbol dewa yang menjadi manusia karena keinginannya menguasai dunia, berbeda dengan Manikmaya yang hanya patuh atau sebaliknya Sang Hyang Antaga yang memiliki keinginan sama dengan Sang Hyang Ismaya. 

Setelah Sang Hyang Ismaya menjadi manusia yang buruk dan bertubuh gendut maka berjalanlah ke bumi memenuhin tugasnya mengabdi pada satria yang menegakkan keadilan dan memerangi angkara murka.

Petruk

Petruk adalah anak kedua Semar. Petruk berasal dari jin atau genderuwo yaitu mahluk halus yang nakal dan cerdas.

Bagong

Bagong adalah punakawan Jawa. Dalam wayang Sunda dikenal nama Cepot. Bagong adalah anak bungsu Semar atau punakawan ke 4. Dalam cerita pewayangan, Bagong adalah tokoh yang diciptakan dari bayangan Semar. 

Bagong bertumbuh tambun gemuk seperti halnya Semar. Namun seperti anak-anak semar yang lain, Bagong juga suka bercanda bahkan saat menghadapi persoalan yang teramat serius.
